The recession has fuelled increases in demand for allotments resulting in long waiting lists and long delays before consumers are granted a plot.
Research among 301 local authorities was undertaken by PCP on behalf of home insurer LV= (formerly Liverpool Victoria) and results were published in the national press including ‘The Guardian’ and ‘The Daily Telegraph’. The research was carried out by telephone and results showed that allotments have increased in popularity as consumers seek to save money during the recession by growing their own food. Currently at least 83,000 are on waiting lists but there are only 206,000 plots across the UK. As a result applicants are on average facing a delay of three years and two months before being granted a plot but in some areas they are having to wait much longer with waiting times as much as 40 years.
