PCP 'Older Faces Audit' used in national press.

PCP carried out an 'Older Faces Audit' in February 2010 where a weeks worth of TV output was examined and ages were recorded of on-screen presenters and main cast members of soaps an dramas. An online survey was conducted with a sample size of 1020 where people were asked their views on which TV programmes portrayed older people in a positive light and which did so in a negative light.

The study found that BBC2 had the highest proportion of actors and presenters aged over 50, with 37%, but BBC1 had just 20% of its presenters and cast members aged over 50%, compared with 27% on ITV1. Channel 4 had only 12% of presenters actors aged 50 or over, while Channel Five had none at all.

The online survey found that the public perceived Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Deal or No Deal as the best programmes for depicting older people. The X Factor and Top Gear were perceived as the worst.

30% of the online sample thought that the BBC presenter Sir David Attenborough gave the most positive portrayal of older people.
